Being a kid is hard

As a parent, you want your child to be happy and healthy. But that isn’t always the case. Sometimes they struggle at school, act out at home, or experience issues with friends and peers. Because they’re so young, they’re not able to process or explain how they’re feeling. So instead, they act out, break down, or shut down. They may cry inconsolably, throw temper tantrums, yell and hit, ignore directions, stop talking, or even start wetting the bed despite being potty trained. You’ve tried to figure out what’s wrong, but you’re getting nowhere. You need support.

Therapy can help figure out why your child is acting as they are and how you can address the behavior so they – and you – can live a happier life. As therapists, we’re specially trained in helping children identify their emotions and connecting them to their behavior. We teach children to express their feelings in a calmer way so you can better understand their thoughts and actions, diminishing the negative behaviors.

You don’t have to conquer your child’s challenges on your own

As a parent, you know your child best. You know their favorite bedtime story, color, and snack. You know they can’t sleep without their teddy bear. You know they twirl their hair when they’re tired. But because children can’t communicate like adults, you can’t know everything they’re feeling and why they’re feeling that way. Sometimes you need the help of an expert to make sure your child is happy and safe.

At Redefining Counseling, we provide child therapy to address a wide range of issues and challenges that children experience including:

How therapy can help your child

Children sometimes have a hard time coping with difficult situations, such as divorce, a family member dying, changing schools or teachers, moving, having trouble making friends, getting bullied. Maybe they witnessed or experienced physical or sexual abuse. Any of these events can trigger a well of emotions that your young child does not have the capability to process or express on their own, resulting in behaviors outlined above. Children’s therapy can help kids and parents address these situations and actions, so they can live happier and more fulfilling lives.

All of our therapists are specially trained in play therapy, which helps children to open up in ways regular talk therapy or conversations can’t. Through the use of toys, puppets, games, arts & crafts, dance and movement, and other fun activities, children are able to recreate an event, describe how they are feeling, and work through painful memories.

During play therapy sessions, children will gain:

  • Problem-solving skills
  • Anger management skills
  • Emotional expression and resilience
  • Better self-esteem
  • Enhanced communication and social skills
